Lighting the Way for Generational Courage

When I reflect on my younger days, I never considered myself to be courageous. I recall being referred to as brave at significant stages of my life, but to be honest, I often felt otherwise. There were some things that I didn't even consider to be courageous at all. Yet, others thought so. There were days when I trembled in my sneakers while taking a few steps of courage, and then panic would sink in, and I'd run away. I lived in that cycle for quite a while. Deep down, I knew I could be courageous, but the resolve to do so wasn't always steady.

I grew. My mind grew. And so did my fears. There were times when my Goliath seemed too big to look at. It looked too scary to face. And quietly, I would surrender and allow it to conquer me. Looking back, I feel a profound gratitude for the challenges I faced. They became invaluable opportunities for refinement. I learned over time that using my voice was an act of courage. Whether that was standing up for myself or advocating for others. Courage became an act of moving forward, doing the right thing and standing firm despite fear or opposition.

Embracing courage can indeed be daunting. It compels us to step away from the comfort of what our mind and body may be telling us and instead take bold steps forward.

Lighting the way for generational courage means living in a way that creates a pathway of strength for those who will follow in our footsteps. It begins with healing ourselves, confronting our fears, breaking old patterns, and fostering new ones. We must first cultivate safety within ourselves to truly offer it to the next generation. When we cling to the hope that upcoming generations will thrive without our active participation, we deceive ourselves and become the very fools we see in the mirror, longing for change while remaining passive spectators in the game of life.

Courage can be quiet, but it is never passive. It is a deliberate choice to be an active participant in our journeys and the legacy we leave behind.
