8 Healthy Hair Habits for Stronger and Healthier Hair

Establishing a foundation of healthy habits is key to achieving and maintaining healthy hair. And it can be a bit overwhelming deciding where to start with all the information on the internet.

Here, I've put together 8 habits that you can start today to help your hair become stronger and healthier.

Focus on your hair's need when deep conditioning

Deep conditioning treatments help to revitalize the hair. Whether you choose to use your favourite store-bought conditioner or do your own treatment, deep conditioning is so important and I don't recommend skipping this step on wash days.

When preparing to wash your hair consider feeling your hair to decide what it needs. Is it extremely dry? Breaking easily? This is a habit that I practice to decide if I'll focus on adding more moisture or a balance of protein and moisture.

Give your scalp TLC

Scalp health and hair growth go together like two peas in a pod. Keeping the scalp clean and using nourishing oils are good habits for healthy growth.

Develop a hair nourishing diet

Healthy hair starts from the inside and incorporating staple vitamins and minerals in your diet can help you to achieve stronger and healthier hair. Antioxidants, Vitamins A,C,D and Omega-3 are great for promoting hair growth and health.

Use low heat

Heat styling doesn't have to be damaging. As with other things in life, use heat in moderation.

Maintain the health of your ends

Split ends, thinning and knots contribute to breakage and poor hair health. Scheduling trims or dusting is an essential practice for healthy ends. You can decide how you'll do your trims and how often.

I do my trims whenever I blow-dry my hair which is typically once a month or bi-monthly. I'll snip away (dust) knots or rough ends that I find when I'm wearing my hair regularly.

Incorporate low maintenance styles

Low maintenance styles are those that you can wear for a few days before re-styling your hair. Examples: twists, twist-outs, braid-outs, flat twisted styles, low-tension buns

These styles help has they reduce over-manipulation of the hair which can cause breakage. A reduction in breakage will help with length retention.

Create a simple haircare routine

It's easier to maintain a good haircare regimen when it is simplified.

Cater to your mental health and wellbeing

Stress can greatly impact the health of your hair and while it isn't avoidable, there are strategies that you can use to manage it. Poor mental health can impact your hair, so focus on your health and the length will come.
