Hair Tip Monday: Difference between dusting, trimming and cutting

Maintaining the ends of our hair is quite important to preventing damage and simply preserving our hair's health. If you're a YouTube junkie (like myself), you've heard many gurus mention dusting, doing a trim or cutting their hair. For a while I wondered what really was the difference but there is a difference and that's what we'll be looking at today.

Dusting:
This is taking a small amount off the ends and once it falls to the floor it resembles dust. It doesn't necessarily take away any length rather maintains the ends by ridding knots, thin or frayed ends (pictured above).

Trimming:
Unlike dusting, a trim accounts taking off from an inch or more to get rid of split or damaged ends. Sometimes this method may include evening out (having hair at one length) your hair or adding layers to create a nice shape.

Cutting:
Now cutting most times occurs as a result of severe damage or if you're going for a specific hairstyle. Tapered afros are so in- so you'll notice a lot of naturals getting this style.

I tend to dust my ends each time I wash my hair so it may be once a week or every 2 weeks. My ends tend to split very easily so staying on top of that really works for me.

How about you? How often do you dust/trim/cut your hair?
