In my earlier years, attending social events always felt like a daunting challenge. I often found myself overwhelmed by the noise and interactions. While in university, I decided to coach myself to navigate events with confidence and intentionality. I realised that while being introverted meant my thoughts and feelings often focused internally, I could still thrive in social settings.
Grab these eight practical tips that you can use to conquer and enjoy events such as expos, workshops, hair shows, and makeup conventions.
Tip 1. Breathe
When you arrive at the event, seek out a quiet corner. A restroom, a secluded area, or even under a tree will do. Take a moment to be present and breathe deeply. This simple technique works wonders for anxiety and can serve as a grounding strategy throughout the day.
Tip 2. Challenge Yourself
Feel the fear and proceed anyway. Setting small, achievable goals can transform your experience at social events. Here are a few goals I’ve set for myself in the past:
- Visit every booth.
- Meet seven new people.
- Approach a specific person. For example, find Coleen Dryer's booth and take a photo with her.
- Initiate conversations with x, y and z exhibitors.
These mini-goals can make socialising more intentional and manageable.
Tip 3. Smile
A smile is a powerful tool. Smiling encourages people to interact with you, and maintaining a friendly demeanour can positively influence your nervous system to rest in a balanced and regulated state.
Tip 4. Take a Break
Recognising when you need a moment is a sign of strength. If you feel overwhelmed, do not hesitate to retreat to the quiet corner you identified earlier. Take a few minutes to regroup before diving back into socialising.
Tip 5. Ask Questions
Introverts excel at being great listeners- why not use this to your advantage? Prepare thoughtful questions to ask at events.
- What inspired you to create this business?
- What was your experience like when you first started?
- What motivates you to keep going?
These questions spark conversation and also show your genuine interest in their stories.
Tip 6. Embrace Your Authentic Self
Being an introvert does not mean you cannot shine. Embrace your qualities. Own your personality and let that enhance your confidence.
Tip 7. Find a Friend
A simple “Hi” could open the door to a new friendship. If you can find someone who feels similarly, you can support each other throughout the event.
Tip 8. Reward Yourself
After you accomplish your small goals, take a moment to celebrate. Pick up your favourite snack, put on your favourite music and have a little celebration just for yourself. You deserve it.
With the right mindset and strategies, attending social events can be a rewarding experience.
